Its always advisable to make time to relate with them at more personal level. They get much more comfortable with themselves after being able to connect their experiences with yours.
Give them room to grow. Without challenges there is simply no growth. They lose their sense of purpose if they operate at one level for long and don’t get to stretch their wings. Job rotations will increase their awareness on different aspects of the job. If the system is such that this art is impossible to practice introduce them to other similar but more complex jobs that what they are currently working on. This way they won’t just gain problem solving skills but will improve in their service delivery. To improve their appreciation of their job one can offer to pay for further training and recognize those that are contributing a lot to the business. Create opportunities for promotion to give them an incentive to work towards.
Asking for their ideas on how best to improve the company is the way to go. Majority of the staff are usually better enlightened than their superiors and have fresh view that can contribute immensely to the overall success of the organization. Efforts to acquit them with the order of leadership should be made to make it easy to submit their issues to the right people. Holding family fairs where they can bring their families or raising their salaries has an almost immediate effect of improving their work ethic.
